Scribe is reservation only, make sure you call at least a week or so in advance. Every year Mariani feeds the thousands of day-tripping, wine-sipping millennials who flock from the Bay Area to her family’s wineryand she uses only the most common of tools: cast-iron pans. Over the holiday break, we popped up to Sonoma to visit Scribe Winery, a spot wed been eager to visit for a few years. We check in for our tasting on the patio. This was definitely enough food to be considered a meal for us.
They told us ahead of time it was heavier than a snack but lighter than a lunch. One in our group wasn’t feeling well and was not a problem to cancel her food and drink. It was no problem to omit the wine and opt just for food for one in our party. They top if off with clementines which were very sweet and refreshing. We were served 4 glasses of wine with our meal. It did get a little chilly so I would bring a blanket. We sat outside on the patio with the beautiful palm trees and mountains as our view. The food was delicious and served family style. Reservations to visit the Scribe farm are available exclusively to members of the Scribe Viticultural Society. When I contacted Scribe, they rushed cards out to my clients and me and could not have been nicer about handling it. They have vintages as far back as 2005, using grapes from other Napa/Sonoma locations. They took a year to clean up the land and make it suitable for growing grapes. Two other cards had recipes for the salad dressing and a margarita (the verjus can be used as a mix for several drinks). Scribe is a new winery, they opened their doors in 2009 and purchased the land in 2007/2008 when it was a turkey farm. The second shipment lacked recipe cards that had come with the previous bottles and the recipe cards are an essential touch. We bought a bottle of the verjus to take home and then once we were home we twice ordered quite a bit more shipped to us to share with friends and to give as gifts some of my clients. The dressing base was verjus, which is made from pinot grapes before they ripen. My favorite was the bib lettuce salad and vinaigrette dressing - I can't guarantee it will be a taste explosion for everyone but it was for me. A lot of the food was grown on the premises in a garden I could see from my table - cherry tomatoes, olives, almonds. Meat, cheese, bread and various vegetables were served in dishes that our group passed around to each other. Prefer steak, chicken, pasta, pizza with wine, so I was surprised how much I enjoyed the food served with the wine tasting here (the Hacienda tasting).
