Then I decided to place the dragon on a scenic background. The light source is from the right side of the screen. I like that it flies off the screen at the highest point of the loop.

It’s “ART”!įirst I made a series of frames of a dragon making a looptheloop. I think I’d like to continue posting GIFs that are from my favorite shows and movies and my own drawings. Making animated GIFs is a lot of fun and they’re really popular online.

Learning how to lip-sync a voice to an animated scene.Goals (maybe my next Genius Hour projects?): I hope becoming a more observant artist will help me become a better student that doesn’t miss details in class. Now I can animate those drawings, paying attention to the physics. I’ve always been inspired by things I read about or saw in movies or out in the world and would sketch series of drawings. I love to draw and now I feel I have some tools that add another dimension to my 2D drawings. I don’t know if I posted the “best” way to make GIFs, and if I continue to create them, I’ll probably realize later that I made some mistakes. I just thought it would be fun to see if I could make a tutorial to prove to myself that I had learned something. There are a lot of tutorials for FireAlpaca, GIMP, and making GIFs, so I’m not posting anything new. I was also inspired that these artists posted their own tutorials. They also use a variety of software, including GIMP which is what I wanted to learn. They are passionate artists and have posted their work online so their animation process could be studied by people like me who are just fans and like to draw. I chose these animators after looking at several others because they have careers in animation (Disney, Dreamworks, etc.) and studied animation in college. The Animator’s Survival Kit and three animators ( DarkmaneTheWerewolf, Michel Gagné, Toniko Pantoja). I limited myself to some of Disney’s twelve basic principles of animation,

Watching youtube videos of talented animators and favorite animated TV shows and movies seems fun at first, but you can easily be buried under all of the inspiration and research. Please see "how to create a GIF animation with FireAlpaca and AlpacaDouga" for the step-by-step instruction.I had so much fun during my Genius Hour! My questions to myself were:Ĭan I make an animated scene and share a tutorial that could help others to make their own? What software will I need? How can I share a tutorial with my class?

Diagram: "File" > "Export Layers(Onion Skin Mode)" If you upload those PNG files in sequence numbers to a GIF animation creating website "AlpacaDouga" you can easily create a GIF animation. It will export as PNG files in sequence numbers. Go to "File" at the top menu, select "Export Layers(Onion Skin Mode)", and designate an exporting destination. Once an animation is completed, let's export as a PNG format in sequence numbers.

You can specify the speed of frames.īy turning off Onion Skin Mode, it will bring back to the regular canvas display. In order to check the animation, go to "View" at the top menu and select "Auto Replay". (For Mac users, command + up arrow key and command + down arrow key.) When moving between the previous and subsequent frames, Ctrl + up arrow key and Ctrl + down arrow key is convenient. This will help creating an animated cartoon or a flip book to see several frames at once. Then, only active layer will appear, and the previous and subsequent layers will appear with a shade of red and green. Go to "View" at the top menu and select "Onion Skin Mode". All three layers will get blended onto canvas, so three balls are visible. But, by handling layers as frames, it enables to create an animation.Īs shown below, for example, there are slightly shifted balls drawn in three different layers. Diagram:Preview the previous and subsequent framesįireAlpaca does not specialize in creating an animation, therefore it is not equipped with a tool to manage frames. Onion Skin tool is used to preview the previous and subsequent drawings with a translucent mode. This will help creating an animated cartoon or a flip book to see several frames at once. A new function called Onion Skin is equipped from FireAlpaca 1.5.1.
